Review: Katerina Hope - Ladybug

Katerina Hope - Ladybug
2009, Katerina Hope

Katerina Hope is a native of Sugar Hill, Georgia, but moved to New York City in the Fall of 2008. A songwriter since the age of fourteen, Hope has already graced the stages of New York City nightspots such as The Bitter End and the Bowery Poetry Club. Hope brings a grace to the stage that wipes away time, if only for a few minutes. Listeners become immersed in her quirky and mature songwriting. Katerina Hope released her debut EP, Ladybug, In July of 2009.

Ladybug opens with How Could You, a lyrically dense, rapid-fire piece of Folk-Rock from the lips of a spurned heart. The song itself is decent, but Hope has a breathy voice that's a bit of a disconnect from the song. The Pop hooks and breathy, child-like voice and lack of conviction of the anger implied by the lyrics make the song less than believable. Your Words has the feel of a 1970's AM R&B hit; a strong musical arrangement that suffers from lyrics that are awkward at times. Hard To Breathe finds Hope stripping things down to just her and guitar and is the best song on the disc. There's a conversational feel to the lyrics on this song, and the sparse arrangement wraps perfectly around Hope's vocals. The Coffee House documents Hope's chase for success along the musical path; the writing here is 100% authentic in feel and works perfectly. Ladybug ends with City Time, a soft and mellow tune that grows in emotional and sonic weight as the song progresses. City Time becomes a declaration of self from an uncertain soul.

Katerina Hope shows her strengths on Ladybug. The composition and arrangements here work perfectly with Hope's voice. The voice is a bit breathy and will require hope to be careful with certain types of songs where it just doesn't carry well (i.e. not matching the emotional weight of How Could You). Otherwise, this is a great introduction to Katerina Hope. I find myself curious to see where she'll go next. Check her out.

I listened to this EP just by chance after viewing this review and I have to disagree. Katerina Hope's voice seems to be a breath of fresh air in this day and age of stale music. This music is exactly what needs to be in every household and on every ipod. Good job Katerina, keep it up!
