Review: The Syllable Section - Linear Views

The Syllable Section - Linear Views
2010, The Syllable Section

Fuzzy electronic dissonance with a purpose is the order of the day for The Syllable Section, one of the more original bands on the nontraditional music scene. Vocalist Mathew Marquardt, bassist Brandon Begota and percussionist Brian Green make up the exciting and off the beaten track trio who have a new album out entitled Linear Views.

Linear Views opens with the dark, psychedelic and vaguely bizarre Lazy Life. Doesn't Happen Much sounds a bit like various musical tapestries sewn together with minimal regard for the general construct of the song. Loneliness Is Where It Starts keeps the unusual construct concept intact, having something of a funhouse feel (my first thought was that it sounded like a Munchkin Beatles tribute band). Direction And Go opens promisingly; laying down some big guitar structure before reverting to the disjointed anti-Punk The Syllable Section seems most comfortable with. Normalcy is either ironically or erroneously named, beginning the transition into the more psychedelic portion of the album. Here The Syllable Section moves from island to island of sounds born of subconscious and periphery, concluding the circular but intriguing I'm Alright Where I Stand.

I spent much of Linear Views waiting for The Syllable Section to surprise me; to break out of the morass of swirling and pulsing sounds and break the paradigm, even if for a moment. That breakthrough never really came. Consequently, I walked away feeling like I spent a lot of time building up to building up to something. There was no payoff as the listener, meaning it's not a recording I'm likely to revisit. That will be a personal response from listener to listener and will vary, but I can see a lot of potential listeners feeling the same way. There's good intent here, but no culmination; no resolution.

Rating: 1.5 Stars (Out of 5)

Wow, don't really understand your logic here. You are all into it and then say you aren't, odd enough. I know I like it and was looking to see if this awesome bizarre record had gotten any press and found this terrible review.
